Robert Goldenberg

Professor (Ph.D. Brown University, 1974), at Stony Brook since 1979.
Research Interests
I am primarily interested in the history of the Jews and of Judaism in Greco-Roman antiquity. I am most familiar with the period during which the Jews were under Roman rule, but one can't pursue this interest without also having studied Hellenistic history and the history of independent Judaea under the Hasmonaeans. I am NOT primarily interested in the Roman Empire after it turned Christian, though I can work with students who are interested in this transition if there are such people around. I am also developing an interest in the religious dimension of ancient life altogether: this is reflected in my undergraduate course on Religion in the Ancient World (HIS 390).
